What is a silver desk accessory?

A silver desk accessory is a functional or decorative object created for use on a writing table, ranging from inkwells and stamp cases to letter openers and paperweights. These items were produced in large numbers during the early twentieth century to equip traditional writing desks and offices.

How do I identify a George V piece?

Identification relies primarily on British hallmarks stamped onto the silver, which record the assay office, the maker's mark, and a date letter corresponding to the reign of King George V. Stylistic cues such as Arts and Crafts influences or specific commemorative dates also help place an item within this period.

Were these items used daily?

Most pieces served practical daily functions in correspondence, record-keeping, and lighting before the widespread adoption of modern stationery. Items like inkstands, blotters, and stamp moisteners were standard fittings on desks in homes and businesses alike.

How should I clean silver desk accessories?

Silver components require gentle cleaning with a specialist silver cloth to remove tarnish without abrading engraved details or damaging hallmarks. Non-silver elements such as glass, leather, and stone should be kept separate from liquid polish and wiped carefully with a dry cloth.
