How do I wire a french revival light?

Many antique wall lights and chandeliers arrive with historic wiring or stripped brass sockets requiring rewiring for modern safety standards. A qualified electrician can run contemporary flex through the hollow cast arms without damaging the original metalwork. For table lamps converted from candlesticks, the wiring typically runs discreetly through the central column. Preserving original fittings where possible maintains the historical integrity of the piece.

Are these lights strictly French in origin?

The stylistic vocabulary originates in France, encompassing Rococo, Empire and Louis XVI revivals. However, workshops across Britain and Europe produced similar revival pieces to satisfy heavy international demand. Stylistic cues such as cast motifs and metal composition help indicate the likely workshop traditions. Many items on the market reflect this broader European interpretation of French design.

How do I clean gilt bronze and ormolu?

Gilt metal surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft brush to remove surface particles without abrading the finish. Moisture and chemical cleaners should be avoided entirely to prevent permanent damage to the delicate gold layer. Professional conservation advice is recommended for pieces showing heavy tarnish or grime. Preserving the original surface patina remains essential for maintaining the character of antique metalwork.

What is the difference between ormolu and brass?

Ormolu specifically denotes gilt bronze where a layer of gold is bonded to a copper alloy base, yielding a warm, deep luminescence. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc utilised for its solid yellow metallic colour without a surface gilding layer. Revival pieces often combine both materials depending on the required visual weight and manufacturing budget. Closer inspection reveals the underlying metal colour beneath areas of wear.
