How do I clean ormolu candelabra safely?

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent dirt accumulation in recessed chased areas. Avoid commercial metal polishes, which can strip the thin layer of historical gilding. Keep moisture away from marble bases and enamel dials during routine maintenance. Professional conservation is advisable if deeper cleaning becomes necessary.

Are these candelabra wired for electricity?

Most examples retain their original configuration designed specifically for wax candles. Conversions do occur, but many collectors prefer unmodified pieces that preserve original drip pans and socket depths. Using modern candle-style LED bulbs can provide safe illumination without altering historical metal components.

What is a clock garniture set?

A garniture set consists of a central mantel clock accompanied by two matching side pieces, such as candelabra or urns. These matched groupings were created to balance the visual weight of a fireplace mantel. Individual pieces within a set share identical decorative motifs, materials, and foundry marks.

How do I identify Empire style pieces?

Empire style draws heavily on classical Greek and Roman motifs, featuring symmetrical designs, military trophies, sphinxes, and patinated bronze figures contrasted with bright ormolu. The forms look solid, architectural, and restrained compared to later curved Rococo revival pieces. Marble plinths on Empire pieces are typically dark or heavily veined, anchoring the sculptural bronzes above them.
