How do I clean lacquer furniture?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent scratching the delicate varnish layers. Avoid using chemical sprays, abrasive cleaners, or excess water on the lacquer or gilt bronze. Maintain stable room humidity to protect the wooden carcase and prevent the lacquer from cracking over time.

Where should I place a display cabinet?

Position the cabinet away from direct sunlight to protect the painted lacquer panels and prevent the wood from fading or drying out. Interior lighting can be added cautiously if glass shelves require illumination. Ensure the floor is level so the doors and drop-front mechanisms align properly within the frame.

How do I date a lacquer cabinet?

Examine the construction methods of the internal drawers, secondary woods, and the style of the ormolu mounts for period clues. Nineteenth-century revival pieces often imitate seventeenth or eighteenth-century models using contemporary hardware. Signatures, stamps, or maker marks on the bronze mounts or carcase wood can also help establish the date of creation.
