What is a figurative art picture?

A figurative art picture represents human or animal subjects in recognisable forms, distinguishing itself from pure abstraction. These works capture people in daily activities, portraits, or narrative scenes. They encompass various mediums, including oil paintings, watercolours, prints, and textiles, offering a direct view into historical depictions of society.

How should I hang these framed pictures?

These framed pieces require stable wall spaces away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to protect paper, canvas, and giltwood. Hanging them at eye level ensures the composition can be comfortably viewed. Consider the weight of the frame when selecting fixings, particularly for large nineteenth-century oil paintings on canvas.

How do I date a Victorian painting?

Dating a Victorian painting involves examining the style of dress, the stretcher frames, and any signatures or inscriptions on the reverse. Examining the framing materials and labels can also provide clues. Artists active during the reign often recorded exhibition dates or incorporated period motifs into the domestic scenes they depicted.

What is the difference between an oil and a watercolour?

Oil paint utilises a slow-drying medium that allows for rich blending and textured impasto on canvas or wood panels. Watercolour employs water-soluble pigments on paper, creating translucent washes. Watercolours invariably require glass protection within the frame, whereas many oil paintings on canvas remain unglazed.
