What periods do these watercolours cover?

The selection spans from the 19th century and Victorian eras through the Edwardian period into the 1940s and 1960s. Artists worked across these decades recording changing British landscapes and society. Different stylistic movements such as British Impressionism and the 19th Century British School appear throughout the collection.

How were these artworks originally displayed?

Makers placed these works on paper behind glass within protective wooden or giltwood frames. This housing defended the delicate water-based pigments from dust and moisture. Many retain their original period surrounds, preserving the historical context of their presentation.

How do I care for a watercolour painting?

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent the watercolour pigments and paper support from fading. Maintaining stable indoor humidity protects the paper and the wooden frame. Ensure the protective glass remains sealed to block airborne pollutants and moisture.

Are these watercolours signed by artists?

Many examples feature artist signatures, dates, or inscriptions identifying specific locations such as St Ives, Whitby, or Venice. Signed works often link directly to Royal Academy exhibitors or regional painters. Unsigned pieces are frequently attributed to the British School of their respective era based on technique and subject matter.
