How do I care for framed oil paintings?

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and fluctuating radiator heat to prevent canvas warping and paint cracking. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth without applying liquid cleaners. Ensure the hanging wire and wall fixings remain secure to support the weight of heavy wooden frames. Professional conservators should handle any deep cleaning or canvas retensioning.

Are these artworks supplied ready to hang?

Most pieces arrive equipped with appropriate hanging hardware affixed to the wooden frame. This allows for immediate placement upon domestic walls. Verify the sturdiness of the existing wire or brackets before mounting, particularly with heavier nineteenth-century oil paintings.

How can I identify the period of a frame?

Frame styles often mirror the prevailing tastes of their production era, shifting from ornate Victorian giltwood mouldings to streamlined mid-century wooden profiles. Examining the corner joints, backboards, and fastening methods reveals clues about age. Many frames are contemporaneous with the artwork they enclose, though some older pieces have been re-framed in later decades.

What is the difference between an oil painting and a print?

Oil paintings feature textured layers of pigmented paint applied directly to a canvas, panel, or board by hand. Each stroke is unique to the artist. Prints are mechanical or manual reproductions on paper, such as lithographs or engravings, which replicate an original composition across multiple copies.
