How do I date a dressing table?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, construction methods, and stylistic cues recorded in the periods listed on this page. Georgian and Regency pieces often feature distinct proportions and hand-cut joinery. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples introduce machine-sawn elements and different brass hardware styles. Comparing the secondary woods and drawer construction helps confirm the era of manufacture.

Where were these tables used?

These tables served primarily in bedrooms, dressing rooms, and private chambers for grooming and correspondence. Their versatile sizes also allowed them to function in small studies and hallways. Many designs incorporated drawers for storage and surfaces for mirrors or writing materials. Their dual functionality made them central pieces in domestic spaces.

Are these pieces suitable for daily use?

Period tables and desks constructed from solid mahogany and oak remain robust enough for everyday tasks like writing or display. Using coasters and protective pads helps preserve the antique polish and leather surfaces. Regular care keeps the timber conditioned and prevents the joints from drying out over time.

What styles are represented here?

The listings encompass Georgian, Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian aesthetic movements, alongside continental influences like Italian and French Neoclassical. Each style brings specific decorative vocabulary to the legs and drawer fronts. Neoclassical designs favour symmetry and carved fluting, while later Victorian items often showcase heavier framing and gilt accents.
