Where should I place a kilim?

These flat-woven textiles suit low-traffic areas where their delicate structure receives less mechanical wear. Placing them in sitting rooms or studies allows the weave to remain protected. Because they lack a pile, they fit easily beneath furniture and doors without causing obstruction. Their lightweight nature also permits hanging them on walls as textiles.

How do I clean a wool rug?

Gentle surface brushing and careful vacuuming without a beater bar remove loose dust from the weave. Professional textile cleaning is advisable for deep maintenance. Keeping these pieces out of direct sunlight prevents the natural wool dyes from fading over time. Rotating the textile periodically ensures even exposure to ambient light.

What is a flat weave?

A flat weave is constructed by interlacing warp and weft threads without knotting pile yarn into the foundation. This produces a thin, pliable textile. Such construction allows for sharp graphic clarity in the botanical patterns. It also makes the textile easy to fold, move, and store.

How do I identify Bessarabian pieces?

Bessarabian pieces typically feature naturalistic floral sprays, baskets of flowers, or scrolling vines inspired by Western European botanical art. These motifs usually appear against dark brown or black backgrounds. The weaving structure combines flat-weave techniques with supplementary weft wrapping. This creates painterly effects distinct from geometric tribal designs.
