What is an English yew chair?

An English yew chair is a traditional wooden seat, usually formed as a Windsor armchair, built from native timber during the eighteenth or nineteenth century. These pieces combine a shaped elm seat with a yew wood upper frame. Craftsmen produced them across rural workshops and regional centres for everyday domestic use, resulting in sturdy construction and distinct local styles.

How do I identify a Windsor chair?

A Windsor chair is characterised by its heavy solid wooden seat, which serves as the central anchor for the legs below and the back spindles above. This distinct method separates them from framed upholstery chairs. Most examples feature turned components, bowed hoops, and native woods such as yew, elm, and ash.

Where were these chairs made?

These chairs originated in rural English workshops, with specific regional variations emerging from areas like the Thames Valley. Local cabinet makers and turners utilised readily available native timber from surrounding woodlands. Production spanned small country shops as well as larger regional makers who stamped their work.

How should I live with an antique Windsor chair?

Living with these chairs involves placing them away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature shifts to protect the timber and joints. Regular gentle dusting preserves the natural lustre of the yew and elm surface. Their robust construction makes them suitable for daily use around a dining table or as a standalone armchair in a study.
