How do I clean an 18ct gold ring?

Warm soapy water and a soft brush will remove everyday oils and dirt from the metal and stones. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, especially if the ring contains softer gems like opals. Dry the piece thoroughly with a lint-free cloth after washing. Regular gentle cleaning maintains the lustre of both the eighteen-carat gold and the diamonds.

Can these rings be resized easily?

Most eighteen-carat gold rings can be altered by a skilled jeweller to fit different finger sizes. The feasibility depends on the band thickness and whether gemstones extend all the way around the hoop. Plain gold shanks adapt simply to sizing changes. Rings with intricate side engraving or channel-set stones require extra care during adjustment.

How do I date an antique ring?

Stylistic clues such as Edwardian filigree, Victorian claw settings, or Art Deco geometric motifs provide the first indication of age. Hallmarks stamped inside the band often offer official assay office marks and date letters. Comparing the stone cuts, such as old European diamonds, helps narrow down the decade of manufacture. Combining these visual and physical markers confirms the historical period.

Are opals suitable for daily wear?

Opals contain natural water content and possess a lower hardness than diamonds, requiring mindful wear. Protective settings like bezels help shield the stone from knocks and scratches during daily activities. Removing the ring before heavy labour, swimming, or gardening prevents accidental damage. With proper care, antique opal rings endure for generations.
