How do I choose the right height?

Consider the ceiling height of your room and the seating arrangement where the lamp will stand. Standard lamps need enough elevation to project light over furniture without exposing the bulb directly to seated eyes. Matching the proportions of the wooden shaft to the scale of your room ensures the piece looks balanced rather than overwhelming.

Where should I place a standard lamp?

Position your floor lamp in a dark corner or beside an armchair to create a warm, layered reading pool. The tall wooden column adds vertical interest to empty wall spaces. Keep the lamp near a wall socket to avoid trailing cables across open floor areas where people walk.

How do I date an antique wooden floor lamp?

Examine the timber species, turning style, and surface finish to determine the period of manufacture. Mahogany and oak pieces often reflect Edwardian or later revival tastes, while painted Chinoiserie finishes point toward specific decorative movements. Hardware details and wiring channels can also offer clues about when the lamp was first assembled or later adapted.
