How do I identify an Edwardian piece?

Edwardian furniture typically dates from the reign of King Edward VII between 1901 and 1910, though the style extends slightly either side. Look for lighter timbers, Sheraton or Georgian revival influences, and delicate inlaid stringing. Unlike heavier Victorian furniture, these items often display brighter mahogany or satinwood veneers. Drawer construction and interior secondary woods like pine also help confirm the era.

What is the difference between a tallboy and a Wellington chest?

A traditional tallboy usually consists of two distinct sections stacked together, offering a large wardrobe-like or double-chest capacity. They often stand on a base with short legs or bracket feet. A Wellington chest is notably narrower and taller, traditionally featuring seven drawers held securely by a hinged locking flap down one side. The vertical locking mechanism is the defining characteristic of this form.

Can I fit one in a modern bedroom?

The compact footprint of a narrow chest makes it exceptionally well-suited to modern homes with lower ceilings or tighter wall spaces. They provide significant drawer volume without dominating the room. Measuring the clearance for drawer pulls and ensuring adequate wall clearance for any top cornices will guarantee a smooth fit. Their upright proportions pair easily with contemporary or traditional interior layouts.
