How do I adjust the shelves?

Most Edwardian open bookcases use a system of side ratchets, wooden pegs, or metal shelf supports inserted into vertical tracks inside the cabinet walls. Lifting the shelf slightly allows the support pins to disengage so you can reposition the board to your preferred height.

Are these bookcases suitable for heavy books?

Freestanding floor models constructed from solid mahogany easily support standard library collections and heavy volumes without structural strain. Wall-hanging versions require secure fixing to solid masonry or wall studs to bear the weight of books safely.

How do I clean mahogany shelving?

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent particulate buildup on the polished surface and intricate inlaid details. Apply a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood and maintain the natural lustre without leaving a greasy residue.

What is the difference between Victorian and Edwardian shelving?

Victorian pieces tend to feature heavier proportions, darker finishes, and more elaborate carved ornamentation suited to formal nineteenth-century interiors. Edwardian alternatives generally present lighter frames, brighter mahogany tones, and refined satinwood inlay reflecting a shift towards airier domestic spaces.
