How do I wear a double watch chain as a necklace?

You can fasten the dog clips together or secure them to the central T-bar to wear the piece as a choker or short necklace. The original T-bar and clips hang naturally as decorative elements, echoing their original function on waistcoats.

What is the difference between silver and rolled gold?

Solid silver pieces offer heavy, durable metal that develops a natural patina over time. Rolled gold consists of a layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core, providing a golden appearance at a different weight. Both materials were widely utilised during the Victorian and Edwardian eras for daily wear.

How can I tell the period of the chain?

Assay office hallmarks, style of links, and accompanying fobs indicate the period of manufacture. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature heavy curb links and Chester hallmarks. Art Deco pieces introduce sleeker geometric patterns typical of the 1920s and 1930s.

Did these chains always come with fobs?

Many chains were sold alongside matching fobs, vestas, or sovereign holders, though others survive as plain strands. These attachments were personal choices reflecting clubs, societies, or everyday utility.
