What is a document storage cupboard?

A document storage cupboard is a period piece designed to organise paperwork, ranging from nineteenth-century mahogany office cabinets to Edwardian oak filing units. These items provide dedicated storage through banks of drawers, fitted interiors, or specialised compartments intended for letters and ledgers.

How do I identify a Victorian filing cabinet?

Victorian filing cabinets typically feature dense timbers like mahogany or walnut, heavy brass handles, and traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery. They often include panelled doors or multi-drawer configurations built for estate or office use. Look for period hardware characteristics and construction methods typical of the nineteenth century to confirm the era.

What is a tambour door cabinet?

A tambour door cabinet uses flexible slats of wood running in tracks to slide open and closed smoothly. This mechanism conceals interior shelving or document slots without requiring clearance for swinging doors. This clever design proved popular in early twentieth-century offices for saving space.

How do I care for antique office furniture?

Care for antique office furniture by keeping pieces away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes that can crack wood or dry out leather. Apply quality wax periodically to nourish mahogany, oak, or walnut surfaces. Avoid excessive moisture and handle brass fittings gently to preserve their original patina.
