What is a decorative display stand used for?

These stands serve to elevate sculptures, vases, and plants, granting them greater visual prominence within a room. They also function as decorative objects themselves, introducing architectural interest and texture through materials like marble, carved wood, and gilt metal.

How do I choose the right height?

Consider the object you plan to place on top and the scale of the surrounding furniture. Taller columns work well in empty corners, while shorter pedestals suit tabletops or restricted spaces. Ensure the top surface area comfortably accommodates the base of your intended display piece without overhang.

Are these stands sturdy enough for heavy items?

Many nineteenth-century pedestals and columns utilise dense hardwoods or solid marble, providing substantial weight and stability. Heavier marble or cast iron stands easily support weighty bronze sculptures or large ceramic vases, provided they stand on an even floor.

How do I care for wooden and marble stands?

Dust wooden surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and feed the grain periodically with appropriate wax to prevent drying. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Keep marble and stone tops clean by wiping with a damp cloth, avoiding acidic cleaners that can etch the polished surface.
