How do D-ends work on a dining table?

The semicircular ends detach or fold to alter the length and footprint of the furniture. When separated, the curved sections function as side tables or console pairs against room walls. During meals, the table joins back together using alignment pins or clips, often accepting extra leaves in the centre to accommodate larger groups of guests.

Can I use daily without damaging the surface?

Hardwoods like mahogany and oak tolerate regular domestic use provided you protect the polish from heat and moisture. Using placemats and coasters preserves the antique finish against everyday wear. Regular waxing maintains the moisture in the timber and prevents the grain from drying out over time.

How do I spot a Georgian table?

Georgian tables typically display rich figured mahogany timber, hand cut joinery, and patination acquired over two centuries of use. Look for subtle variations in the wood grain and traditional hand tool marks beneath the frame. Pillars and legs often feature classical carving styles associated with the period, such as reeded edges or brass paw castors.

Where do I store the extra leaves?

Extra leaves require dry indoor storage away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent warping. Padded leaf bags protect the polished edges from knocks in a cupboard or under a bed. Keep the leaves in a vertical or flat position that matches their natural grain stability.
