Were childs spindle chairs meant for everyday use?

These chairs were built for daily domestic life in nurseries and family parlours, constructed to withstand active use by small children. The robust timber frames and honest joinery reflect a utilitarian purpose, though surviving examples indicate they were often kept as cherished household items.

How do I identify the period of a childs spindle chair?

Dating relies on observing the combination of wood species, turning styles, and construction methods characteristic of specific eras like the Georgian or Victorian periods. Changes in stretcher placement, spindle profiling, and the use of bentwood components offer reliable clues for distinguishing older 18th-century pieces from later 19th-century interpretations.

How should I care for an antique wooden child chair?

Maintain the piece by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent the timber from drying or cracking. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish helps protect the surface patination without altering the historic finish of the ash, elm, or fruitwood.
