What are cased tea spoons?

These items are matched sets of small silver spoons housed in dedicated, velvet- or silk-lined presentation boxes. They were traditionally produced as wedding gifts, christening presents, or formal dining accessories. The fitted containers ensured the polished metal remained bright and protected from tarnish when stored in a sideboard between afternoon tea services.

How do I date a cased set?

Dating relies on examining the small stamped hallmarks impressed into the silver bowls or stems. These official marks include maker's marks, standard sterling symbols, and specific town assay letters that correlate to exact years. Stylistic cues such as Edwardian floral engraving or geometric Art Deco enamelling also help narrow down the period of manufacture when marks are rubbed.

Were these sets used daily?

Most cased sets were kept specifically for entertaining guests, serving afternoon tea, or marking special domestic occasions. Because they spent decades tucked safely inside their fitted cases, surviving examples frequently retain crisp detailing and polished finishes. Many sets show minimal wear on the spoon bowls, indicating they saw very little active service at the dining table.

How should I store cased sets?

The original fitted case provides the ideal environment for keeping the spoons organised and separated from one another. Storing the box in a dry room away from direct sunlight protects both the delicate internal silk linings and the exterior leatherette. Avoid using harsh abrasive cleaning pastes on silver-gilt or enamelled surfaces, opting instead for gentle microfiber cloths to maintain the finish.
