What is a bedside locker?

A bedside locker is a small cabinet or cupboard designed to sit next to a bed. It provides a flat surface for a lamp alongside enclosed storage underneath. Historically, these pieces kept chamber pots or personal items out of sight. Today, they serve the same practical purpose while anchoring the bedroom scheme.

Are they sold as pairs?

Many nineteenth and twentieth-century bedside cabinets survive as matched pairs. Finding two identical pieces together offers a balanced look on either side of a larger bed. Single cabinets also appear frequently, serving well in smaller rooms or mixed arrangements. The inventory shifts regularly between pairs and individual items.

How do I date a wooden cabinet?

Dating relies on observing wood choices, construction methods and stylistic markers. Victorian pieces often use heavy mahogany or ash, whereas Edwardian examples frequently utilise satin walnut or lighter oak. Cabinet hardware, dovetailing and maker stamps provide further clues. Comparing these elements against known period styles helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

How do I care for antique timber?

Antique timber benefits from stable room temperatures away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished finish. Occasional application of traditional beeswax helps nourish the wood and maintain its lustre. Avoid silicone-based polishes that can build up on historic surfaces.
