How do I date a wooden rocking chair?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods and tool marks visible beneath the seat or joints. Nineteenth-century examples often display hand-turned spindles and regional wood choices like elm. Stylistic cues such as aesthetic movement inlays, faux bamboo turnings or Arts and Crafts bobbin details help narrow the period of manufacture further.

Were rocking chairs used in parlours or bedrooms?

Rocking chairs served multiple domestic functions across the Victorian and Edwardian periods, appearing in nurseries for hushing infants, firesides for warmth, and bedrooms for resting. Low fireside rockers allowed occupants to sit comfortably close to hearths, while larger armchairs suited formal sitting rooms.

How should I care for antique wood and cane furniture?

Maintain antique wood by dusting with a dry cloth and applying traditional beeswax sparingly to nourish the dry timber. Avoid placing pieces near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity. Cane seats benefit from occasional gentle cleaning with a damp sponge to keep the rattan flexible and prevent snapping.
