What is a nesting table set?

A nesting table set comprises multiple graduating tables designed to slide together into the footprint of the largest single table. This clever arrangement provided versatile surface space for Victorian and Edwardian drawing rooms without cluttering the floor. Craftsmen often arranged these sets in groups of four, known historically as quartetto tables. They served efficiently for tea, reading materials, or displaying small decorative objects.

How do I date these tables?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, joinery methods, and stylistic indicators recorded across nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples. Victorian and Edwardian imports often exhibit specific export traits intended for Western interiors. Historical context from the late Qing dynasty further helps establish production windows. Subtle shifts in carving depth and the use of inset marble provide additional chronological markers.

Where were these pieces used?

These tables and stands functioned primarily as occasional furniture in nineteenth and early twentieth-century reception rooms and parlours. Plant stands and lantern stands held decorative items or illumination in corners and hallways. Nesting tables and coffee tables moved easily around living spaces to accommodate guests. Their portable nature made them practical additions to domestic interiors.

Faux bamboo refers to hardwood that has been hand-carved and shaped to imitate the segmented stalks and nodes of real bamboo. Artisans employed this technique to capture an exotic aesthetic while utilising durable domestic and imported timbers. This method combined the lightweight look of bamboo with the structural strength required for functional furniture. It represents a significant craft tradition within Chinese export production.
