How do I wire a historic giltwood lamp?

Wiring historic timber and giltwood pieces requires routing modern cable carefully through existing channels or down the central axis to preserve the exterior carving. Professional electricians should handle older standards and altar candlesticks to ensure safe conversion for contemporary use. Many floor lamps and table lamps retain their converted status from past decades, while others require careful updating to protect fragile gesso and gold leaf finishes during installation.

How do I clean giltwood surfaces?

Dust giltwood gently using a soft, dry brush or a feather duster to prevent scratching the delicate gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, and chemical solvents, which strip the gold or dissolve the underlying gesso. Regular, gentle maintenance preserves the historic patina and prevents dust accumulation in the deep recesses of the hand-carved ornamentation.

What is the difference between Florentine and French styles?

Florentine carved giltwood lights often feature bold scrolling foliage, deep relief work, and rich, warm gold leaf influenced by Baroque and Rococo traditions. French designs, such as those in the Neoclassical or Louis Seize manner, emphasise restrained symmetry, classical urn motifs, and crisp architectural lines. Both regional traditions utilise carved wood and gesso, but their decorative vocabulary reflects distinct periods of European design history.
