How do I hang a heavy gilt framed painting?

These substantial pieces require robust wall fixings anchored directly into masonry or wall studs to support the combined weight of the wood, gesso, and canvas. Utilising heavy-duty picture wire and secure brass D-rings mounted firmly into the frame back ensures safe long-term display.

Were the frames and paintings always together?

Many historical artworks were paired with their frames centuries ago, while others were united later in matching period styles to complement the aesthetic. Examining the rabbet and the fit at the back of the canvas often reveals whether the housing is original to the painting.

How should I clean a gilded frame?

Maintenance requires only gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to remove particles without disturbing the delicate gold leaf application. Moisture and chemical cleaners must be avoided entirely, as liquids strip the historic gesso and degrade the underlying gilding.

How do I identify the period of a frame?

Dating relies on observing the moulding profiles, the composition of the underlying gesso, and the specific tools marks left by the woodcarver. Earlier centuries favoured deep hand-carved relief work, whereas later Victorian and Edwardian examples often incorporated moulded composition ornaments.
