What were carved brass trunks used for originally?

These chests functioned primarily as secure travelling luggage for merchants, diplomats, and sailors navigating maritime trade routes across the Indian Ocean and East Asia. Their robust timber construction and heavy brass reinforcement protected valuable textiles, spices, and documents from moisture and theft. Upon reaching permanent residences, owners repurposed them as stationary storage receptacles for blankets, garments, and household valuables. The decorative brass facades also allowed them to serve as visible statement pieces within domestic interiors.

How do I maintain a camphor wood trunk?

Camphor wood requires stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Avoid applying heavy modern polishes, as the natural oils within the wood already preserve the surface and maintain the characteristic aroma. To refresh the protective scent inside the box, lightly sand the interior surfaces with fine sandpaper if the aroma fades over decades of use. Ensure that textiles stored inside remain clean and dry to prevent moisture retention against the lining.

How can I tell an export trunk from an English chest?

Export trunks and Zanzibar chests rely on tropical hardwoods such as teak, camphor wood, or dense foreign hardwoods, paired with extensive brass studding and regional carved motifs. English alternatives, such as mule chests, typically employ native timbers like oak or mahogany with iron hinges rather than heavy brass plates. The construction joinery and decorative vocabulary also indicate origin, with Asian and East African workshops utilising dense surface carving and geometric brass tack patterns distinct from British vernacular cabinetmaking.

Are these trunks suitable for daily coffee table use?

Many sturdy camphor and teak chests possess flat lids that easily accommodate daily placement of books and decorative objects in a modern living space. Their robust internal framing handles moderate weight without structural compromise. Care should be taken to protect the historical timber and brass surfaces from liquid rings and scratching by utilising trays or coasters. The interior compartment simultaneously offers practical concealed storage for living room items.
