What is a buttoned library chair?

A buttoned library chair is a sturdy upholstered seat designed for studies and reading rooms during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These pieces typically feature timber frames made from mahogany or walnut, paired with tufted leather or fabric upholstery.

How were these chairs used historically?

These seats served readers, scholars, and gentlemen who spent long hours working at large library desks or reading tables. Specialised versions included reading stands, adjustable reclining mechanisms, or revolving bases to assist with daily tasks.

How do I care for leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery benefits from regular dusting and occasional treatment with suitable conditioning balms to prevent the hide from drying out. Keeping the chair away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight preserves the natural suppleness of the material.

How can I tell a Victorian chair from a Regency one?

Regency chairs generally display lighter, classical proportions with refined carving, reflecting styles from the early part of the nineteenth century. Victorian pieces tend to be heavier and more ornate, incorporating diverse revival styles such as rococo or later buttoned tufting.
