How were nesting tables used historically?

Historically, these tables remained stacked in a corner or beside a chair until guests arrived or extra surface space was required. The smaller tiers could be separated and distributed around a room for drinks or needlework. Their modular design made them exceptionally versatile for entertaining in formal drawing rooms or everyday parlours.

How do I date a wooden nest?

Dating relies on timber selection, leg styles, and decorative motifs characteristic of specific periods. Regency and Victorian sets often feature heavier proportions or rosewood, while Edwardian examples favour lighter mahogany with satinwood inlay. Art Deco sets introduce exotic woods like Indian rosewood and carved motifs reflecting twentieth-century design trends.

Are nesting tables sturdy enough for daily use?

Period wooden nests are constructed from robust hardwoods like oak, mahogany, and walnut designed for practical daily application. However, the smaller, lighter frames require sensible handling compared to heavy stationary furniture. Regular use does not harm them provided the joints remain stable and tables are lifted rather than dragged across floors.
