What is an open armchair?

An open armchair is a seat featuring exposed wooden arms without full upholstery panels enclosing the sides. This construction allows greater freedom of movement and displays the timber frame. Such chairs typically served in libraries, at desks, or around dining tables in formal houses.

How do I date a brown open armchair?

Dating relies upon stylistic markers, timber choice, and construction methods. Eighteenth-century models often employ dense mahogany with hand-carved decorative motifs, whereas seventeenth-century versions favour heavy oak. Secondary woods and tool marks underneath the seat rail provide additional clues to the period of manufacture.

Where were these chairs used?

These seating pieces found placement in parlours, studies, and dining rooms of large townhouses and country estates. Desk variants supported reading and correspondence in private libraries. Provincial iterations suited simpler dwellings, utilising local fruitwoods and elms instead of imported mahogany.

How do I care for antique wood and upholstery?

Maintenance requires keeping wooden frames away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage. Regular dusting preserves the polish and natural grain of the wood. Upholstery benefits from gentle vacuuming and professional cleaning appropriate to the specific fabric or leather.
