What is a bedside locker?

A bedside locker is a small piece of bedroom furniture designed to hold night-time essentials within arm's reach of the bed. They generally combine a surface for a lamp with enclosed cupboard or drawer storage below. Historically called pot cupboards or bedside chests, these items keep personal items tidy while introducing traditional timber tones into the bedroom scheme.

How do I date a brown bedside locker?

Dating relies on observing timber choices, hardware, and structural styling clues. Victorian and Edwardian pieces often display heavier mahogany or oak construction, whereas 1930s examples lean towards streamlined Art Deco walnut or French parquetry. Examining internal construction methods, such as drawer dovetailing and backboard fixings, also helps narrow down the manufacturing decade.

Are these lockers sold in pairs?

Many listings feature matched pairs, which were originally produced for twin beds or master bedrooms. Single lockers also appear frequently for tighter spaces or asymmetric room layouts. Pairs often command higher interest from buyers seeking balanced symmetry on both sides of a bed.

How do I care for wood bedside lockers?

Maintenance involves keeping antique timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished finish. Applying a traditional beeswax occasionally helps nourish the wood surface and maintain its natural lustre without building up heavy chemical residues.
