What is a brass ormolu cabinet used for?

These cabinets serve primarily for displaying porcelain, glassware, and small valued possessions behind glass doors. They also function as functional side storage surfaces in reception rooms. Their decorative ormolu mounts and polished timber finishes allow them to act as central focal points within traditional interior schemes.

How do I identify a Victorian piece?

Victorian examples frequently employ burr walnut, ebonised wood, or mahogany alongside characteristic marquetry inlay. They reflect nineteenth-century British tastes adapted from continental designs. Construction methods typically show period-specific timber framing and heavy brass mounts tailored to domestic drawing rooms.

Are marble tops original to these cabinets?

Many nineteenth-century French side cabinets and commodes were manufactured with fitted marble tops designed to protect the timber underneath. These stone slabs complement the brass ormolu mounts. Inspect the seating of the marble within the timber frame to ensure proper alignment with the cabinet's proportions.

How do I care for ormolu mounts?

Ormolu mounts require gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of grit in the cast recesses. Avoid abrasive metal cleaners that strip the original finish. Keep the timber and brass away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the polish and prevent wood shrinkage.
