What is a brass mesh screen used for?

These items serve primarily as fireplace spark guards to protect interiors from flying embers. They also act as decorative hearth furniture, particularly French revival and Victorian models.

How do I identify a Victorian guard?

Victorian examples often display heavy brass frames with sturdy wire mesh panels or nursery fender designs. They frequently date from the nineteenth century and emphasise practical hearth safety alongside traditional styling.

Are French screens different from English ones?

French screens commonly feature elaborate gilt bronze castings, rococo revival motifs, and distinct decorative elements like musical trophies. English variants tend to focus on functional wirework and nursery protection with brass top rails.

Can these screens fold?

Many models incorporate multi-fold hinges to adjust around different hearth widths. Freestanding single panels and bowed nursery guards also appear frequently across the periods.
