How do I measure for a modern mattress?

Older bed dimensions can differ slightly from contemporary standard sizes. Check the exact internal length and width of the side rails before purchasing a modern mattress. Ensure the slot-in frame accommodates standard slat bases or modern slatted foundations without putting undue pressure on antique side ironwork.

How should I clean polished brass?

Dust brass components regularly with a soft cloth to prevent grime accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical metal cleaners that strip historic patination. Gentle washing with warm soapy water and thorough drying preserves the polished finish without damaging surrounding iron or painted surfaces.

Are these beds easy to assemble?

Most antique metal frames use simple slot-in wedge joints that require no complex tools. Two people can align the side rails into the headboard and footboard sockets. Check that the floor is level so the castors roll correctly and the iron frame squares up properly during assembly.

How do I date a Victorian iron bed?

Examine the complexity of the brass castings and the presence of style markers like Aesthetic Movement incising or Art Nouveau curves. Heavier cast iron components often indicate earlier Victorian manufacture. Maker stamps on iron brackets or corner plates provide definitive clues to the workshop origin and production decade.
