How do I hang a heavy antique chandelier safely?

Suspension requires fixing directly into ceiling joists using a steel hook and patress capable of bearing the combined weight of the metal and glass. Professional installation ensures the electrical wiring meets current standards while protecting the antique structure. Heavier fixtures demand load-bearing fixings rather than standard plasterboard plugs. Consult a qualified electrician to assess the ceiling capacity before mounting any multi-light brass fitting.

Can I use modern LED bulbs in these fittings?

Most antique light fittings accept modern LED lamps provided the bulb dimensions match the original shade or holder clearances. Low-wattage LEDs generate less heat, which helps preserve vintage silk cords, painted surfaces, and fragile glass. Check the lampholder type during rewiring to ensure compatibility with contemporary bulbs. Dimmable LEDs also allow you to replicate the softer ambiance of earlier lighting.

How do I clean crystal prisms on a chandelier?

Remove detachable crystals carefully and wash them in warm water with a mild dish soap solution. Dry each piece with a lint-free cloth before rehanging them onto the brass armature. Avoid submerging wired metal frames or antique gilt surfaces in water. Wipe the brass and bronze components gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth to preserve the finish.
