Can I convert these antique sconces to electricity?

Many buyers choose to wire these fixtures for electric bulbs rather than burning real wax candles during daily use. Professional electricians can route wiring through the hollow arms or behind the backplate without permanently altering the exterior appearance of the metalwork. Retaining the original candle tubes and drip pans helps maintain the aesthetic of the piece even after electrification.

How do I clean nineteenth-century gilt bronze?

Gilt bronze and ormolu require gentle dusting with a soft brush rather than aggressive metal polishes that strip away the gold surface layer. Avoid using chemical cleaners or abrasive cloths on gilded or patinated bronze. Accumulated dust in the recessed details of French Rococo or Gothic casting can be removed safely using a dry, soft-bristled paintbrush.

How do I tell French Rococo from Gothic revival?

French Rococo and Louis styles feature flowing, asymmetrical scrolls, acanthus leaves, and shell motifs designed to create a sense of movement. These organic curves contrast sharply with the strict architectural geometry found in Gothic revival pieces. Gothic designs incorporate pointed arches, quatrefoils, and ecclesiastical motifs that reflect medieval stone architecture rather than eighteenth-century court luxury.
