What were brass bound teak boxes used for?

These boxes served military officers, colonial merchants, and travellers who needed to transport uniforms, documents, and valuables across oceans and rough terrain. Their robust timber bodies and metal reinforcements protected contents from moisture and heavy handling. Smaller versions functioned as portable desks or wine cellars for use in temporary quarters. Domestic variants like tool chests and dowry boxes later adapted the same durable construction for static household storage.

How do I tell an 18th century box from a Victorian one?

Eighteenth-century examples often display Dutch colonial or early Georgian stylistic traits with heavier timber scantlings and simpler iron or brass mounts. Victorian pieces frequently show more standardised campaign hardware, flush handles, and refined corner brackets. Examining the construction of the interior drawers, secondary woods, and the style of the brass fastening helps narrow down the period. Comparing similar campaign and merchant trunks provides a baseline for dating.

How do I clean and care for teak and brass?

Teak responds well to occasional feeding with appropriate natural oils or waxes to maintain its dark grain and prevent drying. Avoid excessive moisture and keep the timber away from direct heat sources. Brass mounts can be left with their natural aged patina or gently polished using non-abrasive metal cleaners. Care must be taken to avoid getting cleaning agents onto the surrounding teak surface.

Where were these boxes made?

The pieces originate from workshops across the Indian subcontinent, East Africa, and Dutch colonies, as well as British cabinet makers producing military style furniture. Anglo-Indian and Zanzibar pieces reflect specific regional crafting traditions combined with European design requirements. Local workshops utilised native hardwoods and traditional joinery adapted to the demands of maritime trade and colonial administration.
