How do I assemble these beds?

Most antique metal bed frames use a straightforward slot-in iron frame system where the side rails wedge directly into the headboard and footboard posts. Tightening the joints properly ensures the whole structure remains rigid and secure once assembled. Modern mattress bases or custom slats can then be placed securely within the internal iron frame to support your chosen mattress.

Will a standard mattress fit?

Sizes varied during the Victorian and Edwardian periods compared to modern standard dimensions. Checking the exact internal length and width of the iron frame against your mattress size is essential before purchase. Some larger king and super king frames accommodate modern mattresses comfortably, while older single and double frames may require careful measurement.

How do I care for brass and iron?

Painted iron components require only gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with a dry or slightly damp cloth to protect the finish. Avoiding harsh chemical cleaners prevents damage to the original paintwork. Brass elements can be gently polished with a suitable metal cleaner if you prefer a bright shine, though many collectors leave a natural aged patina undisturbed.

Are these frames sturdy enough for daily use?

The combination of heavy cast iron and robust brass construction makes these antique frames exceptionally durable for everyday sleeping arrangements. Their solid metal weight provides inherent stability. Ensuring all joints and castors are correctly fitted and secure guarantees reliable structural support over years of regular use.
