How do I clean tarnished silver spoons?

Clean silver spoons gently using a dedicated silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish without scratching the metal surface. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can wear away hallmarks or delicate details. For spoons with enamel work, take extra care to keep cleaning agents away from the glass sections. Wash them by hand in warm soapy water rather than submerging them for long periods.

Are these boxed sets meant for daily use?

Many buyers choose to use their silver teaspoon sets for special occasions or afternoon tea. Solid silver is durable enough for regular handling if washed by hand promptly after use. Sets featuring delicate vitreous enamel or thin silver-gilt require more careful treatment. Storing them back in their lined cases helps prevent accidental knocks and scratches.

How do I identify the date of a set?

Silver spoons usually carry hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, indicating the assay office, the maker, and a date letter. Consulting standard silver hallmark reference guides reveals the exact year of manufacture. Unmarked sets or those with only foreign stamps require stylistic dating based on design elements like Art Deco geometry or Edwardian ornamentation.

What is the purpose of the sugar tongs?

Sugar tongs included in cased sets were designed for lifting sugar lumps into tea or coffee cups. They match the pattern of the accompanying spoons to create a unified service. These matching tongs add completeness to a boxed set and are collected as a distinct accessory alongside the spoons.
