What is a bow front bedside cabinet?

A bow front bedside cabinet is a small piece of bedroom furniture featuring a convex curved front profile. These units provide enclosed storage surfaces next to a bed. They appear in various historic styles, from eighteenth-century Georgian designs to Edwardian and Art Deco interpretations.

How were historic bedside cupboards used?

Historic bedside cupboards served to hold chamber pots, night lights, and personal items out of sight. Their enclosed doors and drawers kept bedroom necessities organised. Today, they fulfil a similar function while acting as decorative focal points beside a bed frame.

Are matching pairs common for these cabinets?

Matching pairs of bedside cabinets appear frequently in traditional bedroom furniture. They provide symmetry when placed on opposite sides of a double bed. Single examples also occur regularly for tighter bedroom layouts or single beds.

Which woods appear most often on these pieces?

Mahogany forms the primary timber across the majority of these pieces, spanning Georgian and Victorian examples. Burr walnut and satinwood also appear frequently, particularly on Edwardian and later cabinets. Inlays in boxwood add contrast to the primary wood surfaces on decorated pieces.
