What is black lacquered art?

Black lacquered art comprises decorative and functional objects finished with dark resinous coatings, often embellished with paint, gold leaf, or inlay. Items range from large Art Deco cocktail cabinets and fire screens to small papier-mâché boxes and wall panels originating across several centuries.

How do I care for lacquer surfaces?

Keep lacquer away from direct sunlight and excessive heat, which can cause cracking or fading in the surface layers. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical cleaning agents that might damage the delicate paint and gold leaf.

How do I distinguish Regency pieces?

Regency items often feature traditional japanning on papier-mâché or timber bases, reflecting classical European interpretations of Asian design. Look for refined proportions, subtle metallic detailing, and historical forms like portrait miniatures and serving trays.

Where were these items made?

The pieces originate from diverse workshops in Britain, continental Europe, Russia, and East Asia, reflecting global trade and aesthetic exchanges. European makers adapted Asian techniques during the Georgian and Victorian eras, while authentic Japanese and Chinese works arrived through trade and export markets.
