What is a bergman bronze sculpture?

These works are small cast metal figures created in Vienna during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They depict a wide variety of subjects including wildlife, domestic animals and human figures in orientalist settings. Artisans finished each cast by hand using cold-painted enamel techniques rather than traditional firing methods, producing colourful and detailed miniature sculptures.

How do I care for cold-painted bronze?

Protect these pieces from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the painted surface from fading or flaking. Dust them gently with a soft, dry brush without applying liquid cleaners or polishes. Handle the sculptures by their solid metal bases rather than protruding painted details to avoid transferring oils from your skin onto the delicate finish.

Were all pieces signed by the maker?

Many works bear marks such as the stamped urn symbol associated with the Bergman foundry, alongside artist signatures or Bergman monograms. Other authentic pieces carry stamps denoting Austrian origin or model numbers instead of a signature. Unsigned examples still appear frequently, identifiable by their casting quality, subject matter and the specific palette used in the cold-painting process.

What subjects are most common?

Animals and birds form a substantial portion of the output, including species such as pheasants, stags, owls, dogs and horses. These range from single resting creatures to complex hunting and racing groups. Human figures frequently draw from orientalist themes, portraying figures like Arab merchants, warriors, snake charmers and dancers engaged in daily or ceremonial activities.
