Why do these buckets have metal liners?

Metal liners were added to protect the wooden structure from the dampness, dust, and heavy impact of coal or peat. They allowed the inner vessel to be lifted out easily for cleaning and refilling.

How do I date an oak coal box?

Dating relies on observing the construction methods, hardware styles, and decorative motifs such as Arts and Crafts carving or Edwardian inlay. Comparing the joinery against known period styles helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Can these containers still hold logs?

Many of these sturdy wooden bins and coopered buckets remain entirely suitable for holding firewood and logs beside a modern hearth. Checking the condition of the base and the internal liner ensures they can handle daily practical use.
