What is an antique wood picture?

An antique wood picture encompasses framed artworks, oil paintings on wood panels, and carved wooden display pieces from past centuries. These items combine historical visual art with period framing and cabinetry. They reflect the domestic tastes and decorative arts of the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras, utilising timber as both a structural mount and a canvas support.

How do I identify the period of a frame?

Frame periods are identified through construction methods, timber types, and moulding styles such as Victorian gesso or Regency rosewood. Examining the corner joints and the backboards provides further clues to age. Original hardware and assembly techniques also help distinguish eighteenth-century joinery from later nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

Were these pieces used differently in the past?

Many of these items served as formal parlour art, Grand Tour souvenirs, or functional wall mirrors and overmantles in historic homes. Easels were utilised for displaying tabletop portraits and significant folios. Portraiture commemorated family lineages and public figures, while botanical watercolours reflected contemporary scientific and domestic interests.

How should I care for antique wood frames?

Care involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber warping and gesso cracking. Direct sunlight should be avoided to protect both the wood finishes and the artwork. Dusting should be performed gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding commercial liquid polishes that can damage aged gilding and painted surfaces.
