What is an antique wheel cart used for?

These pieces function primarily as mobile serving units for tea, drinks, and dining accessories within a home. Utilitarian variations serve alternative roles, such as storing firewood near a hearth. The domestic trolley evolved to transport refreshments easily between rooms during social gatherings. Today, they remain practical for entertaining or as display surfaces in living spaces.

How do I identify an Edwardian tea trolley?

Edwardian examples typically feature solid oak or mahogany construction with turned legs and designated lower tiers for storage. Many incorporate removable glass or wooden serving trays resting on the top frame. Look for period hardware and traditional joinery methods that distinguish these pieces from later reproductions. The addition of folding leaves or drop-sides is also common in this era.

Can I use a drinks trolley for modern entertaining?

These rolling carts provide sturdy surfaces and mobility well-suited for holding bottles, glassware, and bar accessories. Their multi-tiered design keeps mixing equipment organised and accessible during gatherings. The inclusion of wheels allows you to easily reposition the cart wherever guests are gathered. Vintage brass and glass etageres add a distinct visual character compared to contemporary bar furniture.

What is the difference between a tea trolley and an etagere?

Tea trolleys are built specifically for mobility, featuring wheels, handles, and often removable trays designed to carry items safely from kitchen to parlour. They emphasise practical transport. An etagere focuses on open display across multiple stationary or rolling tiers, frequently utilising decorative materials like brass and glass. While both hold items, etageres lean towards presentation rather than active serving.
