What were antique treen boxes used for?

These wooden containers held everyday substances like tobacco, snuff, spices, pills and string before modern packaging existed. People carried pocket versions daily or kept utilitarian versions on household tables. Their specific forms dictated their function, such as cylindrical towers for multiple spices or hollowed shoes and animals for personal snuff supplies.

How do I date an antique treen box?

Dating relies on combining stylistic clues, wood types, construction methods and any dated inscriptions carved into the surface. Georgian pieces often display different timber choices and simpler joinery compared to later Victorian folk art. Examining tool marks, hinge types and wear patterns helps place an object within the 18th, 19th or early 20th century periods.

How should I clean my treen box?

You should maintain wooden boxes simply by dusting them gently with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using water, soap or modern furniture polishes that can damage the historical surface patination. Applying microcrystalline wax very occasionally helps protect dry timber if the wood appears parched or neglected.

What woods are common in treen?

Makers utilised dense hardwoods capable of holding fine detail, including fruitwood, boxwood, walnut, laburnum, lignum vitae and sycamore. Exotic additions like amboyna and tortoiseshell also appear on certain high-status Scottish table pieces. The choice of timber typically reflects both regional availability and the specific structural demands of turning or carving.
