How do I identify a nineteenth-century frame?

Nineteenth-century frames often utilise heavy gesso mouldings and composition ornaments applied over a wooden base. Closer inspection reveals the depth of the gilding and the specific joining techniques at the corners. Later Victorian interpretations frequently mimic earlier Baroque or Renaissance styles, making timber analysis and backboard inspection essential for accurate dating.

What is an after-master painting?

An after-master painting is a work created by an artist copying or reinterpreting a well-known composition by a previous master. These pieces were often produced for study purposes or to provide accessible versions of celebrated artworks. Many examples date from the nineteenth century, reflecting a strong educational and decorative interest in historical portraiture.

How should I hang an oil painting?

Oil paintings on canvas or board require stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Secure wall fixings matched to the weight of the heavy giltwood frame ensure safe suspension. Allowing adequate space around the frame lets the artwork project its visual weight effectively within a traditional interior.
