How do I care for leather upholstery?

Clean leather surfaces gently using a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove surface dust. Apply specialised leather balms periodically to maintain suppleness and prevent cracking. Keep antique leather away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the original patina and colour intensity.

Where should I place a chaise longue?

Position a chaise longue in a bedroom, library, or drawing room where its asymmetrical shape can serve as a focal point. Ensure adequate clearance around the piece to appreciate the carved wooden frame and scrolled end. Avoid blocking primary walkways, as these items require sufficient floor space to balance their length.

How do I identify a Victorian sofa?

Look for dense timber frames made from mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often decorated with heavy carved ornament or buttoned upholstery. Victorian pieces frequently utilise sprung bases covered in leather, velvet, or brocade. Examine the construction underneath to check for hand-turned legs, brass castors, and traditional hessian webbing.

What is a country house sofa?

A country house sofa prioritises deep seating comfort and loose upholstery over rigid decorative frameworks. These pieces are designed for relaxed domestic use in traditional interiors. They often feature generous proportions and unstructured cushioning covered in durable printed fabrics or plain linens.
