How do I clean antique silver sets?

Clean sterling items with a soft cloth and a reputable silver polish, avoiding excessive scrubbing around engraved details or hallmarks. Store pieces in anti-tarnish cloths or fitted wooden boxes when not in use. Silver-plated items require even gentler treatment to prevent wearing through the thin silver layer down to the base metal underneath.

Are cased sets original to their boxes?

Many Edwardian and Victorian sets remain in their original velvet-lined presentation boxes, custom-built to fit each specific spoon or cruet bottle. Maker stamps inside the lid often correspond to the retailer or silversmith who retailed the ensemble. Inspect the fitted interior for gaps or mismatched indentations that might indicate items were gathered together at a later date.

What does silver plate mean on these sets?

Silver plating involves fusing a thin layer of sterling silver onto a base metal, such as copper or nickel brass, making larger items like candelabras and tea services accessible. Old Sheffield plate and later electroplate represent different eras of this manufacturing technique. Examine high-wear edges for signs of the underlying base metal showing through the silver surface.

How can I date an antique silver set?

British sterling silver bears hallmarks that include a date letter corresponding to the exact year of assay and the specific office, such as London or Birmingham. Stylistic cues like Art Deco geometric lines or Victorian florid engraving also help narrow down the period of manufacture. Unmarked silver plated items rely on the style of the object, the construction of the case and registration numbers stamped into the metal.
