What is antique silver glassware?

Antique silver glassware encompasses decorative and functional vessels that combine glass bodies with silver or silver-plated mounts. These items range from Victorian claret jugs to Edwardian preserve dishes and Art Deco decanter sets. The category highlights the collaboration between glassblowers and silversmiths, resulting in dual-material objects intended for dining and hospitality.

How do I clean silver mounts on glass?

Cleaning requires separating the silver care from the glass maintenance to avoid damaging either material. Use a soft cloth and a gentle silver polish on the metal mounts, taking care not to let harsh chemicals seep beneath the collars. Wash the glass portions separately in warm, soapy water and dry them thoroughly. Avoid submerging mounted pieces entirely if the interior lining or adhesive is vulnerable to moisture.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian pieces?

Victorian pieces often display heavier ornamentation, deeper colours like cranberry and green, and robust Aesthetic Movement or Victorian stylistic traits. They date from the nineteenth century up to nineteen hundred. Edwardian items, spanning the early twentieth century, lean towards lighter mounts, refined proportions, and distinct hallmarks from that specific decade. Examining the hallmarks and the overall heft of the object helps confirm the period.

Were these items used daily?

Many of these pieces served practical functions at formal dining tables, holding wine, spirits, preserves, or biscuits. Wealthy households utilised them during dinners and afternoon gatherings. Over time, their role shifted from active dining room service to display and collection. Today, owners continue to use them for entertaining or place them on open shelving.
