How do I clean antique silver flatware?

Clean sterling silver items gently with a specialist silver cloth or a mild detergent solution in warm water. Avoid abrasive pastes that can wear away thin silver plate or soften engraved details. Dry pieces thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Store flatware in lined boxes or anti-tarnish rolls when not in use.

What is the difference between sterling and plate?

Sterling silver consists of a solid alloy containing a high proportion of pure silver throughout the object. Silver plate involves a thin layer of silver bonded to a base metal core. Hallmarks usually indicate sterling standard, while plated items carry manufacturer marks denoting the plating technique. Weight and wear patterns can also help distinguish between the two materials.

Are cased sets original to the pieces?

Original cases typically fit the exact contours of the cutlery, cruet bottles, or napkin rings they contain. Silk, velvet, or leatherette linings often show specific indentation shapes matching the enclosed items. Maker details stamped inside the box lid frequently correspond to the silversmith who produced the silver elements. Custom fitted boxes ensure pieces remain secure and protected.

How are antique cutlery sets dated?

Dating relies on hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver handles or blades, which indicate the assay office and date letter. Stylistic indicators, such as Art Deco geometries or Victorian ornamentation, provide a broader chronological context. Associated documentation or original cased branding can offer further confirmation of the period. Comparing piece forms with known production eras helps narrow down the year of creation.
